Craft & Weaves
A closer look at what you wear
Colour may catch your eye first. Fabric, weave and the way a piece is made give you more to consider. This space is about understanding those differences, without making every saree tell the same story.
Handwoven and powerloom are different
Handwoven describes fabric woven on a hand-operated loom. Powerloom describes fabric woven on a powered loom. Neither term, on its own, tells you the fibre, place of origin or care requirements.
A thoughtful choice starts with knowing what a particular piece is, rather than assuming every saree is made the same way.
Fabric is not the same as weave
Fabric composition tells you about the fibres used. Weave describes how threads are interlaced. A familiar pattern or regional name does not, by itself, confirm either.
Look for the details stated for the individual piece. If something important is missing, please ask before ordering.
Notice the whole saree
Consider the body, border and pallu together. Notice the scale of the pattern and the colours you would enjoy pairing with it.
Think about your own routine, too. Where would you wear it? What blouse or jewellery do you already own? A saree can make room for more than one moment.
Care belongs to the individual piece
Care needs can vary with fibre, dyes, embellishment and finish. Follow the instructions supplied for your particular saree or jewellery. If you are unsure, ask before washing or cleaning it.
Choose with curiosity
You do not need to know every textile term to find something you love. Start with what draws you in, then ask the questions that help you choose with confidence.
